Rocket Scientist Running for U.S House Seat [Arizona Daily Wildcat]

According to the Arizona Daily Wildcat, a guidance, navigation and control engineer who works for Raytheon Missile Systems won the GOP primary in Arizona’s  7th congressional district in late August and now hopes to unseat U.S. Rep. Raúl Grijalva, a four-term Democrat, come November.

Ruth McClung, a self-described “rocket scientist”, earned a bachelor's degree in physics in 2004 from the University of Arizona in Tucson before going to work for Raytheon. She returned to her alma mater Sept. 7 to address UA College Republicans there.

According to the Arizona Daily Wildcat, the school's newspaper, McClung spent some time pursuing a master’s degree in optical sciences, one of the University of Arizona's renowned specialities.

“Though she did not complete the program, McClung cites her experiences in research and in her career as a rocket scientist give her a sense of familiarity with the sciences.

‘A lot that scientific research does is productive to society,’ McClung said. ‘You can’t ignore anybody when it comes to science.

No word on where McClung stands on President Barack Obama’s plans for NASA, but the young Republican is definitely pro-missile defense “Missile defense needs development and deployment to protect us from rogue nations and terrorist,” she writes on her campaign website.
